The Saint Johannes Market is considered to be a true center of city life as this area concentrates numerous restaurants, shops and entertainment establishments. Scenic age old streets start right from the market. Most of them are completely closed for transport. Not far from the Saint Johannes Market tourists will discover Der Schlosskirche – the Palace Church being a marvelous landmark of gothic style architecture. The church was built in the 15th century. The Palace Church was badly damaged during the World War II however its building was entirely restored by modern architects. Objects of the kind first appeared in the city of Saarbruecken in the middle of the 18th century. In those days the city of Saarbruecken was a center of transit trade. Numerous cranes erected on a river bank were an essential part of the expanding city. The crane which tourists can observe these days was constructed in 1761.
