The Saint Johannes Market is considered to be a true center of city life as this area concentrates numerous restaurants, shops and entertainment establishments. Objects of the kind first appeared in the city of Saarbruecken in the middle of the 18th century. In those days the city of Saarbruecken was a center of transit trade. Numerous cranes erected on a river bank were an essential part of the expanding city. The crane which tourists can observe these days was constructed in 1761.
