Trieste is a city and port in northeastern Italy very near to the Slovenian border, to the North, East, and South. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste on the Adriatic Sea. Throughout its history, it has been influenced by its geographic position at the crossroads of Germanic, Latin and Slavic culture. It is famous for its plethora of caves, both in the Italian parts and in the neighboring parts of Slovenia and Croatia. It caused appearance of speleology there in the late 19th century.

Being situated in the North of Italy Trieste is placed on the plateau 'where the Mediterranean touches the heart of Europe'. The city was surrounded by walls right up till the 18th century. They determined its building structure.

After the demolishing of the walls the city centre began to expand and later it became one of the most significant seaports in the region. The city's function as of a seaport is still acute today for their economy and, besides, it is one of the largest ports in Italy.
Today's Trieste produces an impression of a city in which everything is running too fast as many old buildings are not in good state. But if you try not to pay attention at these things you are sure to notice the beauty the city used to have many centuries ago. While visiting the city do not forget to visit such places of interest there as the Cathedral of San Giusto, Basilica of San Silvestro, Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Israelite Temple.
