Travel Guide to Tegucigalpa, Honduras

This resort is located in the southern part of Honduras. The name of the city can be literally translated as "silver hill". It was founded in 1536 as an industrial center, has long remained the largest mining area and a place of extraction of precious stones and silver. In 1880 the country’s capital was transferred to the city. After this the city began developing as an administrative center.
Tegucigalpa will be definitely a place of a great interest to travelers. The local unforgettable flavor and beautiful nature have simply everything for quality rest. On the streets of the city you can see the buildings that have survived since colonial times. Walk a bit far away from them and you will reach modern glass malls and cinemas flashing with neon signs. Fresh mountain air gives the resort its special unforgettable atmosphere. There are large pine forests nearby the city, so the air here is really fresh. The city is situated on the banks of the Choluteca River; the east coast is considered a modern commercial center, while the west one is a historic place.
The main historical and religious attraction of the city is Iglesia de San Francisco Church built in the 16th century. The church’s interior is made according to the best traditions of the Spanish style. This church looks quite unusual. Another well-known monument is the old San Miguel Church, which building took place during the second half of the 18th century. The most interesting detail about this church is its altar decorated with gold. Visitors traditionally cannot take their eyes off of the ancient and beautiful wooden cross. These buildings are surrounded by a park named Parque Central. This place is well-known because it often becomes the location of numerous concerts and performances for children. This is also a favorite place for walking among citizens and guests of the resort. Finally, don’t forget to visit the building of an ancient university named Antigua-Paraninfo Universitario. The largest Art Museum of the city is opened here.
