Sightseeing in Negril - what to see. Complete travel guide
In Jamaica, vacationers are always welcome to visit the marvelous resort town of Negril. Local authorities do their best to develop Negril and make it a popular resort destination. This is the reason why the town’s tourist infrastructure becomes more comfortable year after year. The resort has become internationally famous because of its eleven-kilometer-long beach with soft white sand and an incredibly clean environment. As there are no factories in the region, Negril has clean air and water. Do you like scuba diving? Negril is one of the best destinations for underwater adventures on the whole island. Having arrived in Negril, you can forget about time and enjoy the moments spent in this paradise and truly trouble-free area.
The famous naval explorer, who has gained worldwide recognition, – Christopher Columbus – visited the area of modern Negril in 1494. His arrival marked the development of the previously uninhabited territory. The town has kept the name received from the Spaniards through centuries. For a long time, the settlement was small and unpopular. Everything started changing in the 60s of the 20th century when Negril began to evolve into a resort. In the 70s of the previous century, the town became popular among hippies who were coming to Jamaica to feel united with nature. Nowadays, Negril is a popular resort destination that attracts many young travelers.
This area is a true paradise for all fans of diving because the coastline is very comfortable for this activity. The underwater world is incredibly diverse and attractive. Besides divers, Negril Beach attracts fans of high diving – the sea is deep in some areas, and so people can jump into the water safely. In the daytime, the beach is always crowded. There are many vacationers, particularly families with children. The sea is always calm in the Negril Beach area, and there are no high waves. In the evening, romantic couples and all connoisseurs of sunset views gather on the beach. The Jamaican coast offers a breathtaking view of the sun that slowly goes beyond the horizon.
Local lighthouse is the tallest building in the town. Its height is roughly thirty-one meters when compared to the sea level. Built in 1895, this lighthouse was a very important sign for ships coming to Negril or passing by. The lighthouse is powered by solar energy. Initially, its lamps required kerosene, which was then replaced by the acetylene, and later the lighthouse got electrical lamps.
Nowadays, everyone is welcome to visit the lighthouse but first, you need to negotiate your visit with the keeper. After this, you can get to the top of the building using a special spiral stair. To ensure the safety of both visitors and employees of the lighthouse, the stair was repaired several times. When you get to the top of the lighthouse, you will feel rewarded because the view is truly unforgettable. This is a wonderful place to see a panorama of the town and the Caribbean Sea.
In the neighborhood of Negril, tourists can visit another interesting place – a nature reserve with numerous royal palms. This reserve was established in 1989. The park covers an area of approximately one hundred and fifty hectares, which is home to more than a hundred different species of exotic flora. Besides interesting plants, tourists can see various animals during their walk – approximately three hundred species of animals live here. Colorful butterflies fly from one flower to another, and beautiful birds sing in the trees. From time to time, some reptiles in the grass can interrupt you from listening to their cheerful tweeting.
This miraculous place is great for making a picnic or even fish in one of the water basins. It is hard to find a better place for a stroll in the shade of trees on the whole island. To make it more comfortable for visitors, there are wooden roads that lead to the most secluded parts of the park where people can watch crocodiles and numerous flocks of birds. The park has a serene atmosphere, and only music of nature interrupts the silence here.
There is an airport eleven kilometers from Negril. It regularly received domestic charter flights. Sangster International Airport close to Montego Bay handles international flights to Jamaica. Many air carriers have flights from all over the world to this airport. If your country doesn’t have a direct flight to Jamaica, you might need to take a connecting flight to Frankfurt or London. After that, tourists can get to Negril from the airport by bus or taxi.
