Accor, a Paris-based hotelier, wants to make its middle-scale hotel brand Novotel to undergo green certification by the end of 2012. Currently the portfolio of hotels by this brand reaches 400 properties all over the world. 78 of them have already gained this status by getting checked by EarthCheck (former Green Globe).
Main conditions for green hotels include using energy-efficient bulbs, installing flow regulators in showers, using only recycle paper and cardboard, offering organic products and special balanced menu for kids, safe disposal of compact fluorescent tubes, and so on. Currently around 80% hotels by Novotel brand follow the majority of these rules, so Accor has good chances to get this brand certified.
EarthCheck provides strict regulations for hotels that want to become certified. As a rule, the applying hotel is checked periodically within 10 months by an independent inspector. This officer checks also such parameters as use of water and energy, use of pesticides and cleaning products, waste managements and much more. If successful, the hotel gets a certificate that proves its green status. This certificate is revalued once in two years.
