Bondi Beach is considered one of the most popular beaches in Sydney. It is located near the city. Local aborigines gave the name to this section of the coast hundreds of years ago. The word "Bondi" means "water breaking on rocks" in their language. This name fully reflects the main feature of the beach – its characteristic strong waves. This stretch of coast was privately owned in the second half of the 19th century. Francis O'Brien bought it and 200 acres of land adjacent to the coast.
He began equipping a recreation area here in 1855. Everyone could relax in the fresh air and have a picnic there. Gradually, the popularity of the equipped coast became very large. O'Brien took the initiative to restrict people's access. However, the Sydney City Council did not adopt such an initiative. Bondi Beach has officially declared a public beach in 1882.
Workers' settlements were located near the coast in the 20th century. Immigrants from various European countries actively settled the area after the end of World War II. The length of the picturesque beach is about 1,000 meters. It is considered one of the best surfing spots in the world today. Mostly experienced surfers come here. Bondi Beach is considered a rather dangerous beach for swimming and sports. There are the most dangerous back currents off its coast. The southern part of the coast is considered the most dangerous. It is only open to professional surfers.
However, some parts of the coast are considered relatively safe. They are suitable for training surfers of the average level of training. The most dangerous time to relax on the coast is considered summer. Sharks are often found off the coast during this period. The area around the beach has become a well-equipped resort in recent years. There are restaurants and cafes, water sports centers and souvenir shops here. Several well-known hotels and major cultural center “Bondi Pavilion” are located near the coast.
