Waiotapu Valley, New Zealand

From series “Top 15 Most Fantastic Creations of Nature”
New Zealand can boast with Waiotapu Valley of Geysers known to the whole world. It is able to surprise with its unique formations, and a variety of unearthly landscape. The area of the valley is about 18 square km. The name literally translates from the Maori language as a holy water. The territory is under the protection of the state from 1931. Now, travelers can visit the only part of the valley called Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland.

Waiotapu Valley, New Zealand The most famous formation of the valley is Lady Knox Geyser. Guests of the reserve can observe its eruption every day; it starts promptly at 10-15 am. An eruption is caused artificially. Soapy water is poured into the muzzle, then the geyser begins to throw water jets up to 20 meters high. An eruption lasts about an hour.

The most famous and impressive among hot springs located in the valley is the Champagne Pool. This spring is characterized by abundant carbon dioxide emissions that make the water in it bubble like a champagne. All hot springs of the valley differ with a unique chemical composition that gives spectacular color tints. Limestone rocks along the banks of some of the geysers are painted in deep orange color, and other springs may have bright yellow hue. All these landscapes may seem incredible to ordinary tourists, who are far from the in-depth study of chemistry and geology. Next - Sand Dunes of Skagen

Top destination around Waiotapu Valley - Rotorua

Besides the historic past of the indigenous people of Rotorua, the museum exhibits artifacts that tell the history of the city and its development. Visitors are even welcome to see a small film about the past of local people and the geothermal springs of this part of New Zealand. The film is only fifteen minutes long but its authors managed to cover all important events in the history of Rotorua including the infamous explosion of Tarawera Volcano. The film is really interesting and skillfully intertwines the mythology and geology.

There is an airport located ten kilometers from the central part of Rotorua. Built near the shore of the namesake lake, this airport receives domestic flights from such cities as Oakland and Queenstown. There are also flights to Christchurch and Wellington. Additionally, there is a port for seaplanes five kilometers to the west from Rotorua. It takes around forty minutes to reach this city from Oakland by air. A flight from Wellington is significantly longer – more than one hour.
