Bordeaux is the administrative capital of Aquitaine; it features lots of unique landmarks. In 2007, the old city was included in the list of world-wide cultural heritage. Even a simple walk around Bordeaux is an exciting excursion. There is an ancient Roman amphitheater, a number of early Medieval religious buildings and countless architectural landmarks. For many Bordeaux is better known for its wine making. The area around the city is occupied with vast vineyards and long-standing wineries, which are also worth visiting.
Another wine making center is the city of Saint-Emilion. There are also various historical landmarks to see. One of them is an amazing Saint-Emilion Church, built back in 12th century. Carved into the rock, it has survived until nowadays and has also been declared the world-wide landmark. The complex was enhanced with extensive tunnel network. These days it is used as a wine-vault.
Pyla dune is the unique natural landmark of Aquitaine. This sand dune of 104 meters high is the biggest one in Europe. It's located close to Arcachon bay beaches and offers an excellent panoramic view over surrounding area.
