Road Rules and Traffic Regulations in Cyprus - Driving Nuances

1. If you’re going to visit Cyprus, you should not forget that this is a country with left driving. During their first days in Cyprus, drivers, who are used to right driving, should be especially careful. Cyprus is distinguished by a very unusual and somewhat illogical rule – drivers who move on the right have the advantage at the crossroads.
2. The driver and all passengers present in the vehicle must fasten seat belts. Children under 12 can only be transported in a special chair, which should be installed on the rear seat of the car.
3. Talking on a cell phone while driving is prohibited. While driving, it is also not permitted to eat and drink. The fine for this violation is approximately 150 euro.

Nuances of Car Rental in Cyprus

To save on your rental, we advise to book your car in advance. You will save the most if you do this several weeks or even several months prior to your trip. Rental offices in Cyprus usually raise rental prices over time, based on the number of cars left available for the accounting period.

When looking for an exotic car (cabriolet, minivan or limousine), we advise to check in the rental offices located at airports, as they usually provide much wider choice comparing to offices in urban areas.

Upon receipt of invoices, bills and documents for your car at the rental location, please compare the obtained data with your voucher. Quite often, employees of rental offices in Cyprus try to add optional charges or services without informing customers.

It is very important to pick up your car at the rental office in Cyprus in a correct way. Prior to leaving the office, carefully inspect the car for various defects, and ensure that all the discovered defects are mentioned in your rental documents. In case of a non-compliance found, place a demand for correction to the rental officer.

You can always check our car actual rental offers in Cyprus. Simply use the search form at the top of the page. We guarantee that you will not find better prices anywhere else!
4. The maximum permitted blood alcohol content for drivers is 0.5 ppm. Motorists should take into consideration a very important feature of local traffic regulations: if the car is standing with its engine running, and there is a person on the driver’s seat, it is considered driving. Thus, if you need to talk on the phone, you have to stop the car completely and turn the engine off, otherwise it will be very difficult to avoid the penalty.
5. When approaching a roundabout, you should remember that cars that move in a circle have the advantage. Drivers, who want to enter the circle, should not forget to turn on the right turn signal, and when you exit the circle, you must turn on the left turn signal.
6. All cities of the country have mostly narrow roads that have one-two lanes in each direction. Some roads have an extension near the crossroads - one additional lane. This lane (the far right one) is designed for motorists who are about to make the right turn. If you plan to move straight ahead, then you should not occupy that lane.
7. There is one more important rule regarding the right turn. It is allowed to turn only at the green light, even if the arrow signifying turn has already faded. However, before that, you must give way to oncoming vehicles.
8. The majority of petrol stations work round the clock, so you shouldn’t experience any problems with fuel purchase. Many large petrol stations are combined with service stations that usually work around the clock every day except Sunday.
9. In settlements, the maximum allowed speed is 50 km/h, and on country roads you can move at a speed of 80 km/h. On highways, the speed limit is 100 km/h. It should also be mentioned that you cannot move on the highway at a speed of less than 65 km/h. Driving slowly is allowed only in case of a serious damage.
10. It is really hard to find a space for free parking. The problem affects both large and small cities. As it has been noted above, the majority of roads in Cyprus are very narrow and winding, so parking there is very difficult. Locals are well aware of the location of convenient parking places, so inexperienced foreign drivers will find it quite hard to find a suitable parking.
11. Finding a paid parking lot is not difficult. It is simply enough to look for road signs with ««PARKING»» mark. At municipal parking lots the payment should be made through machines, while private parking lots usually have a person who collects payments. In any case, drivers need to stock up on plenty of coins in small denominations.
