Police checks often take place on roads of Armenia, and drivers should treat this fact with a share of understanding and patience. At request of a police officer, the driver must present all necessary documents and take a breath test that detects blood alcohol content.

11. Despite the fact that speeding fines are relatively small, speed of vehicles is strictly monitored. The amount of the fine depends on the level of surplus and can range from 10 000 to 32 000 dram.

Hints on Car Hire in Armenia

When choosing a car for your Armenia trip, don’t forget to check and compare the franchise amount (indicated in the rental conditions) for all cars considered in your selection. The franchise may vary from 200 to 2000 euro/dollars even for cars of the same class. A thorough comparison will allow you to choose the option with the lowest franchise.

15. Wrong parking fines have been increased significantly. Now, violators have to pay as many as 20 000 dram for an improperly parked car. The fact is that cars parked on narrow streets often cause serious traffic congestions, and sometimes even become reasons for major traffic accidents.

16. Every year the number of cameras on the roads only increases, and this fact has helped to keep track of hundreds of thousands of traffic violations. Of course, all the measures taken have a positive impact, but the number of traffic violations is still very high – approximately 600,000 a year.

17. Motorists, who visit Armenia in winter, are strongly recommended to equip their vehicles with a set of good winter tires. Winter roads are always very slippery, but locals are not really bothered by this fact. They continue using summer tires, simply trying not to move as fast as in summer.

18. Foreign drivers should be especially careful when traveling on suburban routes. As it has been noted above, only some roads in the country are paved. Moreover, country roads are often very narrow. In poor visibility conditions road accidents occur very often because drivers simply don’t see oncoming cars.
