Road Rules and Traffic Regulations in Armenia - Driving Nuances

1. The total length of roads in Armenia is 7700 km. Tourists, who are used to travelling on quality paved roads, should keep in mind that there are much more dirt roads in the country than the asphalt ones. The total length of dirt roads is more than 6000 km.
2. Foreign drivers, who decide to go to Armenia by car, will need to pay a fee for crossing the border. The amount of the fee is about 10,000 dram (20 euro) and it gives the right to use all roads in the country during 15 days. If you want to stay in the country for a longer period, you will need to make the payment again.

Nuances of Car Rental in Armenia

To save on your rental, we advise to book your car in advance. You will save the most if you do this several weeks or even several months prior to your trip. Rental offices in Armenia usually raise rental prices over time, based on the number of cars left available for the accounting period.

When looking for an exotic car (cabriolet, minivan or limousine), we advise to check in the rental offices located at airports, as they usually provide much wider choice comparing to offices in urban areas.

Upon receipt of invoices, bills and documents for your car at the rental location, please compare the obtained data with your voucher. Quite often, employees of rental offices in Armenia try to add optional charges or services without informing customers.

It is very important to pick up your car at the rental office in Armenia in a correct way. Prior to leaving the office, carefully inspect the car for various defects, and ensure that all the discovered defects are mentioned in your rental documents. In case of a non-compliance found, place a demand for correction to the rental officer.
3. There are the following standard speed limits in the country - in settlements the speed limit is 40 km/h, in the country it’s 90 km/h, and on highways the speed limit is 110 km/h. In residential areas, it is prohibited to move faster than 20 km/h.
4. Armenia has very strict laws regarding the consumption of alcoholic beverages. While staying in the country, motorists should completely refrain from consuming alcohol. The allowable alcohol blood content for them is 0.0 ppm. The violation of this rule will result in a number of serious punishments. In addition to a heavy fine, the offender’s driving license may be cancelled and the driver may be imprisoned.
5. The use of lower beams in the daytime is not necessary. Lower beams must be turned on at night and in the daytime in case of adverse weather conditions.
6. Children under 12 years are not allowed to be carried in the car if it is not equipped with a child seat or a special restraint system. The child seat can be installed in the back seat of the car only.
7. Rules regarding the use of seat belts are slightly different from those in European countries. Thus, the driver and passengers in the front seat must fasten seat belts, while passengers in the back seat are not obliged to fasten seat belts. The fine for an unfastened seat belt is 5000 dram.
8. Traffic regulations regarding the use of a cell phone are, however, the same as adopted in many other countries. It is allowed to use a cell phone while driving can only if it is equipped with a «hands-free» device. The violation of this rule will result in a fine of 3,000 dram.
9. One of the heaviest fines, the size of which is 50 000 dram, is imposed for incorrectly tinted glass. The requirements regarding transparency of glass should be specified in advance.
