Advices for Car Trips through Armenia
19. Local petrol stations usually sell two types of gasoline - premium and regular. When going to a petrol station, make sure you stock up on large amount of cash – local petrol stations do not accept other forms of payment. At some petrol stations, there is even no cashier and money for petrol should be given to the employee on duty.
20. Quality petrol can be purchased in large cities only. Consequently, experienced drivers do not recommend refueling at provincial petrol stations. Fuel here is not of the best quality, and some suburban petrol stations sell it in bottles and cans.
Renting a Car in Armenia - Recommendations
If you need a car with an automatic transmission, it is recommended to book it in advance. Cars with automatic transmissions are often sparse in Armenia, so the rental confirmation may take a longer period.
When selecting a specific model for traveling throughout Armenia, we recommend to take into consideration some practical apects. If you are going to drive mostly in the cities, then a car of a small size is preferable, while for long distance trips (and trips in the mountains) we recommend to choose a larger and more powerful car.
Prior your car retrun, please clean the salon from a garbage, and do not forget to take away all your belongings from the passenger compartment.
At the car return time, please ask the officer to make a visual inspection of the vehicle for defects and to sign the acceptance report. Keep the invoice and the acceptance report for next few months.
22. If traffic is busy and heavy in the city, travelling in the country is much more pleasant. In some parts of the country it is even hard to find other cars on country roads, but even in such situations drivers should not forget basic traffic rules. Locals use parking lights rarely and do not turn low beams on even in poor visibility conditions. Naturally, that often leads to dangerous situations.
23. There are no stationary police posts in Armenia. Police patrols can move from one place to another several times a day. The police are usually friendly with foreign guests, so in case of a minor violation that is made for the first time they might not issue a fine.
24. There are some very interesting Armenian national features about vehicles. According to local drivers, Niva is the best and most prestigious car. In their eyes, no powerful SUV can compare with this car. Even happy owners of Lexus cars buy Niva as a second vehicle as it is considered a key indicator of well-being and good taste of the owner.
26. Large number of racks is another interesting feature of local roads. They will surely be handy in case of an unexpected failure. Regardless of the route, the driver can be sure that very soon he will have an opportunity to drive the car on a platform and solve the problem in a relatively comfortable environment.
27. Motorists, who visit Armenia for the first time and expect to drive on mountain areas, are strongly recommended to make that trip only together with a local guide. Country trails and mountain roads are very complicated and can puzzle any driver. Moreover, some of mountain roads may be extremely dangerous even for experienced motorists.
