Ostrava is one of the oldest cities in the country, first mentions of which appeared in 1267. Ostrava was located on the crossroads of important trade routes, so until the 18th century it was known as a major trading city. Later deposits of coal were discovered on its territory. This fact has greatly fastened the industrial development of the region.

Today several metallurgical plants operate in this city; one of the mines has been turned into a museum dedicated to the mining business. Even though this beautiful monument was built in the 16th century, it is in great condition nowadays. The Town Hall stores the exhibition of the main museum, which tells the story of Ostrava. St. Wenceslas Church is a wonderful example of the Gothic style. The church was rebuilt and restored several times, but it managed to maintain its original style and elegance.
