The historical center of the island is the town named Parikia, in which you will find many old buildings. In the Castro quarter you can see the protected castle that was built in the 13th century. Not far away from it you will find the temples of Demeter and Apollo. The oldest religious building of the island is Panagia-Ekatontapiliani Church, which was built in the 6th century. Despite the fact that the building was reconstructed many times, it has preserved its initial atmosphere of grandeur and solemnity. Near the temple you will find the Archaeological Museum that exhibits the collections of old chronicles, many of which are engraved on marble tablets.
One of the oldest settlements of the island is Lefkes. Many buildings here were built in the 16th - 17th centuries. The most notable building of Lefkes is Agia Triada Church. This is a beautiful building made of white marble, which differs from the low buildings that surround it and resembles a magnificent palace.
