Nowadays the commune of Chamonix is known as one of the major centers of tourism and winter sports in the Alps of France. Here have taken place the first Winter Olympics in the history of sport (1924).

The 20 mile long off-track slope from the 3843m peak (Aiguille du Midi) is widely known not only in this town. The funicular leading to the peak was built in1955 and had no equal lifts at that time.
