Linz is the third largest city of Austria and capital of the state of Upper Austria (German: Oberösterreich). It is located in the north centre of Austria, approximately 30 km south of the Czech border, on both sides of the river Danube. The population of the city itself is 189,343 (2007), and 271,000 in the Greater Linz conurbation. It is located in the north of the country about halfway between Vienna and Salzburg . Linz is rather interesting by its historic Old Town Quarter with a number of nice patrician houses and a large pedestrian zone.
To start your getting acquainted with the city is better from the Main Square and then work to the Old Town Quarter.
