In an 80-kilometer distance from Vilnius takes place the marvelous city – Kaunas. It's the most important city in Lithuania, after the capital of course. The natives consider Kaunas to be the best city to feel the Lithuanian spirit.
The main attraction in Kaunas is surely the city center. It is surrounded by the Neris River from one side and by the Nemunas River from the other. The city center is famous for its old buildings, the most noticeable of which is the City Hall. At the square nearby (the City Hall Square) you may find a lot of local shop. Some of them date back to the 16th century. But still the pearl of the square is the City Hall.
If you turn to the north-east and have some walk, you find yourself at the Cathedral, which was founded in the days of Vytautas the Great. But, on the whole, the buildings at this area were mainly created in the 18th century. To the north-west from the square, the ruins of the Kaunas Castle are situated. Unfortunately only some parts of the walls and tower are left undamaged, but it still creates an unforgettable impression.
If you get tired of all these ancient buildings, go to the New Town (it's to the east of the old one). Being in the New Town you can't, but notice Freedom Avenue (the large pedestrian zone with lots of shops that lie along it). There also takes place St. Michael's Church that faces the Freedom Square. Another interesting place is the Mykolas Žilinskas Art Museum. There one can enjoy the best art collection in Baltic.
The A. Žmuidzinavičius Art Museum (or as it's also called the Devil's Museum) is worth visiting too. There they keep a great number of statues of devil. One of the most shocking exhibits is the Hitler and Stalin that are shaking a wicked calf over a pile of Lithuanian craniums. The Pažaislis monastery of the 16th century and Resurrection church (the tallest one in the country) are also very curious places.
