The Hawar Archipelago is located in the Persian Gulf. The islands are almost uninhabited. The Bedouin tribe lived here in the past. But their villages are abandoned today. Only the police station and the hotel remained on the islands. A special permit is required for fishing. The islands are home to many species of birds. A rare species of cormorant nests here. More than 60 species of migrating birds overwinter on the islands. These birds leave for their nesting sites in the spring. Birds nesting here arrive in their place. The Arabian Oryx and sand gazelle are found from rare mammals here. A large population of dugongs lives in the sea near the islands. The region has been under state protection since 1997.
