According to the reports by IHG, in 2010 the bookings related with conducting high school balls increased by 500%. In order to fit the emerging popularity of such events, all Holiday Inn hotels in the United Kingdom offer special prom packages that cost £18 per person. This price includes the venue, a DJ, a buffet and a glass of champagne.
The significant rise of popularity of high school proms comes from popular American TV shows “90210” and “Glee”, where school balls are considered one of the main and unforgettable events of all school life.
According to Tom Rowntree, the spokesman of Holiday Inn hotels, American-style proms experience boom in the UK. English scholars also want to celebrate this important moment of their lives. For them this is the time when one era ends and a new one begins, so there’s no wonder why young people want to make this moment memorable. Rowntree also adds that the rise in bookings of 500% has made the company offer a special package, but the requirements for prom become more and more extravagant.
UHG has conducted a survey concerning prom in this year. According to it, in 2011 UK parents will spend approximately £31 million on prom preparations. The average cost of preparation of one person estimates costly £2,442.
