Airport location, terminals and transportation
O. R. Tambo International Airport is located in the Republic of South Africa, in the Johannesburg area, in the city of Kempton Park. The airport comprises 2 runways. Its passenger traffic is rather high and amounts to 21 million people per year. It is considered the main air terminal for international and domestic flights in the Southern African region. The airport handles international flights to all the continents. It was put into operation in 1952. There are six terminals at the airport, but these can be broken down into three major areas: Central (A3), International (A1, A2) and Domestic (B4, B5).
At the airport, passengers can travel by Gautrain (rapid rail system) to nearby cities, business districts and tourist areas. The Central Terminal houses the Gautrain station. Besides, the R24 and R21 highways go through the airport. A few bus city lines, operated by Metrobus and Putco, pass through the airport several times a day. Moreover, there are private bus lines operating express buses to the Central Business District of Johannesburg, as well as to other locations.

The multi-storey parkade is placed opposite the Central Terminal. The airport comprises 9 parking zones. O. R. Tambo International Airport offers several parking options, which include short-term parking, long-term parking as well as pick up and drop off parking.
