Due to the biggest Baltic military aerodrome situated in Tartu the city was closed to the rest of the world during the period of the Soviet Rule. Today Estonia is independent and it is open to all the countries and its people are known as very friendly and hospitable to its quests. It may one of the reasons why it is actively visited by lots of tourists every year.
Tartu is world famous for its university, which is one of the oldest in Europe. It is the place where majority of international conferences and seminars are held.
Due to this fact the city acquired the reputation of being 'Athens on the River Emajõgi'.
During the last several years greater amount of the city's building have been restored and rebuilt. Today it is a fine place to spend time with its restaurants, hotels and cafes.
