There is such thing as a "social distance" in the city. While talking to local residents, it’s recommended to stand on the distance of an arm's length. A closer position during conversation is considered a violation of individual space. While meeting, people in Innsbruck greet each other with a light handshaking, which lasts only a couple of seconds. Closer friends and relatives can exchange cheek kisses. During the acquaintance with local people you should look into their eyes as straying eyes are a sign of neglect. However, the look should not be too fixed. Republic Day (or National Day) is the most favorite national holiday of local people. It is celebrated annually on October 26. The holiday is the time for numerous interesting events, concerts and performances. However, the majority of residents prefer to leave the city for the holiday, and relax on the countryside. Republic Day is a family holiday. On the evening of the celebration day the main square is always crowded with people as here takes place amazing fireworks.
