Cannes is situated on a large bay that welcomes luxury cruise boats and yachts from around the Mediterranean. In summer months Cannes attract many tourists who enjoy lying in the long, sandy beaches of La Croisette that stretches the whole length of Cannes' coastline. Most of the beaches are private, so you will need to pay to gain access.
Originally, Cannes was a small fishing town on southern coast of France. In the 11th century it was owned by monks. Later they expanded their monastery to the nearby Island of St Honorat and built a tower on the Suquet hill. Nowadays you can still find it in the same place. The fishing tradition also lives on. Every day fishermen’ wives sell the yield at Forville market.
Visit to Cannes is not complete without a stroll along La Croisette. Here you can meet hundreds of people, from locals to tourists. There is also the Musée de la Malmaison, an exhibition of modern art, looking out over the sea.
