The UK Enjoys More Visitors from China

News The UK is even more popular with tourists from China. There was a steady growth in 2017, and the country is going to welcome even more visitors who come to the UK during their Chinese New Year holidays.

During the first half of 2017, the UK enjoyed 33% more visits from China. The spending was growing even faster – 48% up. The total number of visits from China to the UK estimated approximately 330,000 and the spending was £667 million. According to forecasts, these figures will only grow in 2018, so the estimated total number of visits is 349,000 and the total spending of Chinese in the UK is expected to hit £722 million. While these numbers do not look extraordinary, it is important to mention that in the period from 2006 to 2016 the number of visits from China to the UK has more than doubled.

Chinese New Year, which is celebrated this week in the country (February 16), is a prime time for Chinese tourists to travel, and many of these visits will be made to the UK. Moreover, this country hosts one of the largest Lunar New Year celebrations outside Asia. Hotels in Manchester and Birmingham might attract more tourists from Asia as these cities are hosting festive parades, lion dances, and other performances. There are also special events in Durham, Glasgow, Newcastle, and Edinburgh. Of course, London is in the epicenter of the Lunar New Year celebration with special parades conducted on Trafalgar Square and Chinatown.

For the UK, tourism is one of the major sources of income, and China is the largest outbound tourism market in the world. Therefore, there is no wonder why the UK is very interested in attracting more guests from China. VisitBritain has ambitious plans regarding 2018 and is launching a new campaign in China that will show that Britain is a fun place to visit and has many interesting experiences to enjoy. First images and short films have already appeared in China. They show little-known landmarks and unique experiences in Britain and then encourage viewers to “Find Your GREAT Britain”.

Chinese visitors are among the biggest spenders in the UK. On average, they spend £1,972 per visit, which is nearly three times higher than the average sum across all markets. Chinese visitors also tend to stay longer during their visit in the UK – they spend 10 nights during their British holidays, while the rest prefer to spend six nights.
