China’s trademark office has green-lighted as many as 38 applications from U.S. President Donald Trump and his family regarding the registration of trademarks linked to the name “Trump”. According to Chinese officials, the applications were approved because they meet the country’s law and standards. This might mean that the family of the U.S. president is going to promote the “Trump” brand in China.
Such a step, however, raised many questions in the home country of Donald Trump, as the ties between business and politics can potentially cause conflicts of interest, and the Trump family is known for its extensive business affairs. Some law makers in the United States already question whether Donald Trump can use his current position to create preferences for its business.
The registered trademarks are mostly variations of English and Chinese words together with “Donald Trump”. The lists of the words were submitted to the Chinese trademark office. Judging from the names, it looks like Trump is interested in hotels in China, golf clubs, restaurants, branded spas, bars, financial and insurance companies, massage parlours, shops and even bodyguard services. Currently, the trademarks are in the process of preliminary approvals, and if no objections appear during the 90-day period, the trademarks will be completely registered in the end of May and beginning of June.
The Trump family already has an established business around the world, including golf clubs in Australia, properties in South Korea and Japan, and even apparel business in the Philippines. Currently, the Trump empire is run by sons of Donald Trump, but the president remains its sole beneficiary.
