The 32nd meeting of the UNWTO World Tourism Network is dedicated to the theme of Child Protection. According to the company, governments should take a leading role in that and prevent the exploitation of children in tourism.
Any tourist related industry has two sides, a bright and a black one. Exploitation of child labor is one of such problems where, according to Taleb Rifai (the general secretary), governments need to have zero tolerance. The meeting was attended by numerous officials, including the Ministers of Tourism of Sudan and Ghana. They all heard about best practices in the field of child protection from India, Myanmar, Kenya, Uruguay, the Maldives, and the World Childhood Foundation.
It was also pointed out that it is possible to protect children only with the help of cross-sectoral cooperation and coordination between different governmental bodies. Main ways of exploitation of children in the tourism sector include child labor, sexual exploitation and child trafficking.
The World Tourism Network on Child Protection was founded in 1997. It is an open network with multi-stakeholder participants, which are mostly representatives of governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations.
