Travel Guide to Echternach, Luxemburg

Echternach is a little town in eastern Luxembourg, located not far from the border with Germany. Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg. It was founded in the 1st century AD as a Roman settlement.

Current population of Echternach is 4000 people. Echternach is located in the area called 'Little Switzerland' for thousands of sandy hills and small streams. The River Sauer that flows near the town forms the border between Luxembourg and Germany.

The Abbey of Echternach is a monastery founded by Willibrord, the patron saint of Luxembourg, in the seventh century. The abbey is now a popular tourist attraction, and owes much of its modern fame to an annual dancing procession that is held every Whit Tuesday. Echternach was almost demolished during the Second World War, but soon it was reconstructed and nowadays you can admire its narrow streets and small houses.
