Not far from the city of Phonsavan in Laos is the strange plain of the clay jugs - the undeveloped area, on whose territory hundreds of unique stone buildings are presented. The outline of these buildings reminds of the real jars. The difference is only in the impressive size. The height of the rock formations is from 1 to 3.5 meters, and the average diameter is about 1 meter. The weight of the largest 'jug' is about 6 tons. Whoever, and for what hundreds of centuries has created these unexplainable stone buildings, remains to this day the chief author of Laos.
It must be noted that all the stone mortars were cut out of the stone, which is atypical of this terrain. A lot of the interesting legends are connected with the plane of the clay jugs. As a legend tells, the locals used these huge mortars once for cremation of the dead. After the other version the huge stone mortars were used for rice and wine storage. The scholars have discovered that the age of the unusual stone formations is more than 2.5 thousand years.
Altogether there are almost 500 pitchers the suburb of Phonsavans. It is indisputable that all the huge stone mortars were carved out of the stone by hand. How the people did 2 500 years ago, however remains unclear. According to a Lao legend, the giants once lived in this picturesque valley, created by the gigantic formations. Archaeological research has been carried out in the valley since the 1930s. Every year the archaeologists discover the new unique facts.
