Richmond International Airport is a state-run airport in the state of Virginia. Both military and civilian aircraft make shared use of the airport. The distance between RIC and the centre of Richmond amounts to 7 km. The air terminal was put into operation in 1975. It services roughly 4 million passengers per year. The airport took over from the airfield built earlier in 1927, which was named in honour of the aviator Richard E. Byrd. RIC mainly serves domestic flights across the country, it also handles a large number of cargo flights. The airport encompasses 3 runways and one passenger terminal.

One can get to the city by public buses. Limousine and executive car services are available at the airport. You can take a taxi at any time, as the services work until the arrival of the last flight of the day. The taxi stands are placed next to the North and South parking garages (the lower level). Several vehicle rental firms operate at Richmond International Airport. These are Alamo, Avis, Budget rent a car, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, and Thrifty. The desks of the car rental firms are found next to the main entrance (the lower level). The garage, where rental cars are collected from and returned to, is on the left side of the passenger terminal.

The rental conditions include age restriction. The driver must be aged 21 or over. Depending on the selected company, you may have to make a deposit. Credit cards are accepted for payment. In order to register a rental agreement you will need to present a valid driver's license containing the entries written in Latin script (otherwise, you will be required to produce not only a national driver's license, but also an international one) and an identity card.

The rental cost includes the insurance in case of theft or car accident and the airport surcharge. Some local taxes are not included in the rental cost. The use of a car in another country and crossing the border should be agreed upon with the company in advance. Sometimes this opportunity is provided at an additional cost. Fuel policy depends on the car rental company.

The airport offers several types of parking, which are economy-parking, daily garage parking, hourly garage parking, and valet parking. Economy parking is available in parking lots A and B, not far from the terminal. A 24-hour free shuttle services the parking. Daily parking is provided in the North and South parking garages, next to the terminal. This parking is free for less than 60 minutes. Hourly parking spaces, which are meant for picking up and dropping off travellers, are offered on the first level of these parking garages (the first 60 minutes are free of charge). So as to find valet parking, you should follow the signs while proceeding to the arrival level. You will find this parking just in front of the terminal (on the right side).

The Richmond Airport Hotel is set opposite the economy parking. The following hotels are nestled in the vicinity of the airport: the Comfort Inn, the Hampton Inn, the Hilton Garden Inn, the Holiday Inn Express, the Homewood Suites by Hilton, and the Quality Inn.
