Valetta is famous for its religious monuments. The territory of the city is home to approximately 300 old churches and cathedrals. St John's Co-Cathedral is one of the most famous landmarks of the city. The building of the beautiful church took place in the second half of the 16th century. The church exhibits a masterpiece of the international level – the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. The precious painting was brought to the chapel of the church soon after its building.
A no less important landmark of Valetta is located in its suburbs. This is the Ghar Dalam Cave. During the archaeological excavations, which took place in the cave, scientists found skeletons of ancient animals and traces of first settlements that appeared on the island yet during the prehistoric era. There is a museum nearby where visitors can see precious findings of archaeologists. Among the relics exhibited, travelers will find skeletons and bones of animals that disappeared thousands of years ago.
Returning to architectural landmarks of Valetta, it is simply impossible to fail to mention the Grandmaster’s Palace. The height of the gorgeous building is 97 meters, and the length of its walls is 83 meters. The magnificent baroque building was constructed for the Maltese order in 1569. Visitors of the excursion have an opportunity to admire the grandiose building and the design of inner premises, walk in picturesque inner yards with old fountains and statues.
