Verona is located in the Veneto area in the north of Italy, not far away from one of the country's most beautiful lakes -- Lake Garda. North and east of the city, there are Vapolicela and Soave districts, renowned for their wine-making traditions and hilly landscapes.
Not only is Verona famous for its grand Amphitheater. Every year, opera performers and connoisseurs from around the world gather in Verona for its annual summer opera festival. There is a unique Romanesque church and a wonderful Renaissance garden.
Another interesting attraction for Middle Age architecture lovers is the Castelvecchio castle, built by the influential della Scala family. In the 20th century, the castle underwent restoration under the direction of Carlo Scarpa, a famous architect.
It should be noted, that it is not actually architecture that makes Verona so attractive for visitors, but its close association with the world literature. This is the place where William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet lived and where the whole plot unfolded. The drama keeps thundering around the globe and in people's hearts and minds, and the Old Town, with its famous courtyard and Juliet's House (Casa Giulietta) on Via Cappello, beckons tourists from various countries, wanting to take a breath the romantic air of the past.
