Warsaw city guide: sightseeings and touristic places

Warsaw panorama - popular sightseeings in Warsaw If you haven't visited the bright city of Warsaw in about 15 years you may have an image of a boring unsightly city built up with communist-styled houses.

Of course there is still a large quantity of dull and clumsy constructions created by the Soviet-era designers. Nevertheless this city has an interesting history and great cultural heritage. It has a vivid nightlife which grows year to year. It is amazing how Warsaw managed to survive through all it's challenges and finally became one of the capitals of the European Union. In 1940-s after the WWII was over, the population of the city was gone – some were captured by Fascists and sent to the camps, others were killed. Many Warsaw inhabitants before the WWII were the Jews, they made 1/3 of the population. There are not that many Jewish people in Warsaw any longer – they were mostly eliminated during the WWII.

The communists kindly restored most of the historial places of Warsaw astonishing the Western Europe and the people of Warsaw.

The fact of building a «new» Warsaw was roughly critisized by some people, they never believed the city could become the same 'Old Warsaw', though the fate of reconstruction stroke most of the European cities. But if you look closer, those refurbished buildings are so faithful to the originals – there are no time marks on their new shining facades.

The reconstruction of Warsaw was noted by addind the city to the list of The UNESCO World Heritage places in 1980.

Warsaw is situated on the banks of the Wisla (or Vistula) river in the central-east of Poland.

If you wold like to see most of the beautiful historical places you should visit the left bank of the river. On the opposite side there is a glamorouus part of the city called Praga district.
