Located in the south of Italy, Napoli or Naples in English is both the capital of the Campania region and the province of Naples. Due to the neighborhood of the Bay of Naples and the Mount Vesuvius this place is heart-stoppingly beautiful but at the same time makes you feel unsecure.
Almost 3000 years passed since the city was said to belong to Greece and was called Neapolis.
All the area was later transformed by the Romans into their 'resort' often addressed as 'happy land'. According to some sources the grave of the great Roman poet Virgil is located in Naples' Parco Virgiliano.
Speaking about politics, the city saw numerous changes. When the years of Roman authority ended the city was alternately ruled by Goths, Byzantines, Lombards, Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese, Spaniards, Austrians, Bourbons and rebellious French that of course influenced the Naples' architecture and culture.
Later, in 1266, Naples was chosen the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily but the war with Napoleon brought about new changes and the city was called the capital of the united Kingdom of Two Sicilies. All the political transformations were finally over when Italy became a single state and Naples ended up just as one of many other Italian cities.
