It is a well-known fact that staying in London is not cheap. The capital of the UK is pricey for both leisure tourists and long-stay guests. London hotels are among the most expensive in Europe, but accommodation is not the only problem. Last year, London became more affordable due to weaker pound but the improved strength of the national currency in 2020 has pushed London back to the Top-20 of the most expensive cities across Europe.
Central London entered the list based on the prices of consumer goods and services in February and March 2020, reaching 16th place. The UK’s capital left behind such expensive cities as Strasbourg, Antwerp, Luxembourg City, and Lyon. To make the list, researchers compared a basket of similar consumer goods and popular services in more than 480 cities in different regions of the world. Such reports are particularly important for companies that send their employees abroad, so they can calculate the cost of living correctly. That being said, the information is useful for leisure tourists because they need to estimate their travel budget besides the price of a hotel in London.
The most expensive country in the world is still the same. Four out of the five most expensive cities in the world are located in Switzerland. If you think that booking a hotel in Zurich is your major spending on a vacation in this beautiful city, think twice. A simple medium cappuccino in a Zurich café costs GBP 4.8, and a simple lunch consisting of a burger, fries, and a drink costs jaw-dropping GBP 11.36. The average price for the same items in Central London is significantly cheaper GBP 2.84 and GBP 6.24 respectively.
The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly affected the cost of living in different locations worldwide. For example, many Chinese cities dropped in the ranking, the same as some other gateway cities across Asia. For example, Beijing dropped from 15th to 24th place, and Seoul from 8th to 17th place.
The pandemic is not the only reason that pushed many cities down. For example, Hong Kong became more affordable for visitors because of the political unrest. The city fell in the global ranking from the 4th to the 6th place. Southeast Asia, on the contrary, keeps growing in price. Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia all these countries become more expensive for foreigners. Thailand has become the 60th most expensive city in the world (previously 64th).
