Amsterdam Raises Its Tourist Tax to the Highest in Europe

News The capital of the Netherlands has never been a cheap city. Hotels in Amsterdam are quite pricey, and now tourists will have to spend even more because the city’s authorities decided to raise the tourist tax. Starting from next year, visitors will have to pay an extra that will potentially make local tourist tax the highest on the continent.

The Dutch capital will ask its guests to pay 3 euro per person overnight. This rule will come into force on January 1, 2020. At the moment, there is already a tourist tax in the city – 7% of the room rate. The new change will certainly strike harder budget tourists as the price is fixed. On the other side, visitors to luxury hotels will hardly even notice the new tax.

One-star hotels will surely feel the pressure. For example, a twin room in a one-star Rembrandt Square hotel in Amsterdam that has only a shared bathroom costs as much as 132 euro. On top of that price, tourists will have to pay a daily tax of 15.97 euro. The tax consists of 9.97 euro for the room and 3 euro per person staying in that room.

Let’s compare Amsterdam with other European capitals. Berlin hotels have a tourist tax of 5%. Even if we take one of the most expensive hotels in Berlin, Adlon Kempinski, as an example, it still charges a lower tourist tax than a one-star hotel in Amsterdam. The Berlin hotel that welcomed such famous guests as Barak Obama, Michael Jackson, and Angelina Jolie asks 249 euro per night plus a tourist tax of 11.65 euro. Rome has a fixed tourist tax that is currently the highest fixed tax across Europe. Guests of five-star hotels have to pay 7 euro per person every day. Even if we decide to book one of the most expensive hotels in Rome, the Hotel de Russie, we need to pay 815 euro per night and a tourist tax of 14 euro.

Another German city, Dortmund, has the highest percentage tourist tax at the moment. This means that guests of Dortmund hotels need to pay 7.5% of the room cost per night. Once again, let’ calculate the tax for the most expensive hotel in Dortmund – the Fountain Loft. The price will be 249 euro plus 14 euro in tourist tax. As we can see, this is again cheaper than the tax for staying at a one-star hotel in Amsterdam. Children under 16 are not required to pay the tax, while campsites will charge only 1 euro per adult. The new law concerns Airbnb properties as well – the tax for this type of accommodation will be raised to 10%.
