Hong Kong Hotels Greet More Guests As the City Hosts 7 Large Events in April

News Hong Kong is widely recognized as a popular event and meeting destination, and April 2019 proved this once again. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) organized as many as seven trade fairs that attracted 12,300 exhibitors and more than 236,000 buyers. Over 9,500 exhibitors come from China and overseas. Naturally, this was a good opportunity for hotels in Hong Kong to boost their revenues.

Among buyers that attended the events, there were people from 181 countries. The total number of buyers was 2% higher than a year ago. Approximately 60% of the total number of guests (140,000 people) was from mainland China and overseas. The year-on-year growth in this category of visitors is 4.5%. Here is the list of the exhibitions organized by HKTDC in April 2019: the HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition), HKTDC Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair, HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition), HKTDC International ICT Expo, the Hong Kong International Printing & Packaging Fair, HKTDC Hong Kong Houseware Fair, and HKTDC Hong Kong International Home Textiles and Furnishings Fair.

The importance of these events for the hospitality industry of Hong Kong is crucial. As the Hong Kong Tourism Board stated earlier, the per capita spending of overnight conferences, meetings, and exhibitions in Hong Kong is HK$8,218 (roughly US$1,047). Knowing this figure, we can estimate that overseas participants of the events mentioned above generated approximately HK$1.3 billion for the hospitality and related industries of Hong Kong.

Many of the April events touched an important theme of smart city development. It is an international trend these days, and Hong Kong is a part of it. Smart city and Smart Living concepts were represented by several visionary projects and installations. The results of the surveys conducted during the trade fairs show that 90% of respondents are optimistic about smart city developments and think that some elements of it like smart lighting may become trendy in the coming two years.

Even though participation in exhibitions is not cheap, especially when exhibitions are overseas, but for companies, it is one more way to promote their products and establish new connections. Most businesses surveyed at the trade fairs in Hong Kong are optimistic about their prospects in 2019. 46% of respondents expect their sales to rise, and another 45% think they will remain at the same level.
