Leipzig Hotels Attract a Record Number of Guests in 2018
The German city of Leipzig continues to enjoy the growing popularity as a travel destination. Last year, it welcomed a record number of guests – 1,836,797 arrivals. Leipzig hotels were definitely busy with a truly fantastic number of overnight stays that reached almost 3.4 million. For the second year in a row, the German city sets a new record.
2017 was a strong year for the hospitality sector of Leipzig, but last year managed to overcome that amazing result. The number of guests added 7.5%, and the growth in overnight stays reached 6.5% in 2018. The 3.4 million result mentioned above takes into consideration the city of Leipzig only. The performance of the Leipzig region is much stronger. With 2 million overnight stays in it, it is easy to calculate the total number of overnight stays in the Leipzig region – 5.4 million. This is more than a quarter (27.1%) of all stays in Saxony.
Last year, travelers could choose from 135 Leipzig hotels and other accommodations with a total of 18,922 rooms. This marks the growth of room supply by 12.7% in 2018. Leipzig Tourism and Marketing (LTM) is proud of the new record and the growing popularity of the city as a travel destination. For years, the company was promoting Leipzig and organizing different marketing activities. The city attracts both domestic and foreign leisure tourists. Moreover, thanks to the Leipzig Trade Fair and the new “Do-it-at-Leipzig” initiative, the city welcomed more business events and conferences in 2018.
Domestic travelers increased the length of their overnight stays by 6.3%, and foreign travelers – by 7.1% in 2018. In terms of the growth in overnight stays, Russia, Austria, and Denmark are the leaders. Travelers from these countries spent +34.7%, +13.5%, and +13.4% more time in Leipzig in 2018.
Here are the top 10 international source markets for Leipzig in 2018: USA (49,334 overnight stays), Switzerland (41,655 overnight stays), Austria (41,038 overnight stays), United Kingdom (40,764 overnight stays), the Netherlands (37,394 overnight stays), Poland (31,241 overnight stays), Russia (22,134 overnight stays), Italy (18,000 overnight stays), France (17,075 overnight stays), and Denmark (15,467 overnight stays). LTM is very optimistic about the future of the tourism industry in Leipzig. According to the latest survey by the IFH Koln, Germans consider Leipzig the most attractive city with a population of over 500,000 inhabitants for domestic travel. Moreover, the city will host a number of interesting events this year, including the Leipzig Book Fair, the Wave-Gotik-Treffen and the Bachfest.
