Cyprus has always been a popular destination. The third largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is a wonderful vacation destination all year round. It appeals to different categories of travelers families, romantic couples, travelers interested in nature and cultural landmarks. That said, there is nothing strange in the growing popularity of the island.
According to the information published by the Ministry of Tourism in Cyprus, 2018 was a record-breaking year for the hospitality industry of the island. The number of global visitors added 7.8%, and the number of tourist arrivals almost reached 4 million (3,938,625). An interesting fact a third of these arrivals (1,327,805) were from the UK. That is 5.9% higher than a year ago. In 2017, the number of tourist arrivals from the UK reached 1,253,839.
The United Kingdom and Russia remain the major source markets for tourism to the island. The proportion of visitors from these countries is 33.7% and 19.9% respectively. Greece and Israel are also important source markets for Cyprus. The share of these countries in the total arrivals reached 4.7% and 5.9% respectively in 2018.
July 2018 was the best month for hotels in Cyprus as the island enjoyed 539,626 global arrivals. August had the second highest result that is slightly behind July - 534,847 visitors. Again, tourists from the UK were the most significant group. For example, as many as 175,904 guests from this country visited Cyprus in July 2018. In December, the number of arrivals was smaller compared to summer months, but it was still higher than in 2017 - 106,563 vs. 98,924. That is an increase of 7.7%. The growth in the number of guests from the UK was outpacing the average results 13.6% more Brits visited Cyprus in December 2018 compared to December 2017. Greek travelers had a similar result with the growth of 13.5%.
Most travelers visit Cyprus for leisure travel purposes. For example, more than a half of visitors (51.1%) in December 2018 stated holiday as their purpose of visiting the island. 36.9% visited their families, and only 11.9% visited Cyprus for business purposes. In their statement regarding the record year for Cyprus, the Ministry of Tourism expressed their delight with this important achievement. With such advantages as rich cultural heritage, clean Blue Flag beaches, delicious local cuisine, and traditional hospitality, the island has much potential and 2019 has everything to become another year of success.
