China as a tourist destination attracts more and more foreign travelers. What are foreigners primarily interested in and how do they prefer to plan their vacation in the country? The China Guide knows the answer to this and many other questions. The company has just published its 2018 China Inbound Tourism Report that is based on feedback and experiences of thousands of the company’s customers.
First of all, foreign travelers prefer to visit China during the months with mild weather. Spring months (March, April, and May) and two fall months (September and October) remain the most popular seasons. January and February are the least popular only 6% of foreigners choose to visit China during these months. Public holidays and school breaks are also an important factor that travelers should take into consideration. For example, the Chinese travel a lot within the country during certain holidays, so hotels may be overbooked on those days.
Hotels in Beijing are particularly popular with foreign guests. As many as 82% of travelers visited Beijing during their vacation in China last year. Shanghai hotels are also getting more popular, especially with business travelers. The financial capital of China was visited by almost 31% of foreign guests. Xi’an is the third most visited destination. More than a quarter of foreign guests, 27%, visited this ancient city in 2018. The reason for that is simple Xi’an is home to the internationally famous Terracotta Army.
There is a list of second-tier destinations in China that become increasingly popular. These are cities like Chengdu, Guilin/Yangshuo, Suzhou, Zhangjiajie, and Hangzhou. Among these destinations, Guilin/Yangshuo is the most popular because of its incredibly attractive nature. Finally, third-tier destinations that foreigners are interested in are the following: Huangshan, the Yangtze River, Datong, Pingyao, Guangzhou, Luoyang, Yunnan, and Tibet. These destinations do not attract mass visitors. As a rule, travelers seeking new experiences visit them. Destinations like Yunnan and Tibet are well-known among foreigners, but it is more demanding in terms of time and money to visit them.
The vast majority of foreign travelers prefer to book their vacation in China in advance. As a rule, vacations up to 3 days long are booked a month in advance. Longer vacations, such as 4 7-day tours, are booked around two months in advance, and people prefer to book tours of 8 days and longer almost three months in advance.
