Best Alternative Holiday Destinations According to Brits

News Even though summer is over, many travelers keep planning their future vacations. The British are no exception – in fact, they have been taking more holidays than in the past five years. Some plan to take a vacation in winter or earlier, and some already start thinking about their summer vacation next year. Regardless of the time, it looks like the time of simple beach holidays is over as more and more travelers crave for something new and exciting.

These days, it is easier to turn any dream vacation into a reality, so travelers do not limit themselves to hotels in Mallorca or other popular resorts. Last year, city breaks were the most popular with Brits, followed by beach vacations. Such “alternative” destinations become more sought after modern travelers who seek authentic experiences rather than leisure relaxation.

A new survey by ebookers named Alternative Holiday Index analyzes the most popular destinations in Europe and ranks them in accordance with such factors as arts and culture, authentic food, architecture landmarks, friendly local people, and even cheap beer. 31 European cities participated in the Alternative Holiday Index, and here are the results.

Tallinn hotels may enjoy even more guests from the UK in the future as the city and Estonia in whole were ranked the best alternative destination in Europe. Gorgeous medieval architecture, beautiful nature, and Nordic food are some of the top factors that draw travelers to the country. Estonia also won in such categories as “great for Instagram”, “friendly locals”, and “Natural beauty and exploration”.

Lithuania and Latvia occupied second and third places respectively. Lithuania was particularly praised for its nature, authentic food, and places ideal for a romantic vacation. It was named the best place for couples who seek outdoor activities, delicious local food, and cheap beer. Latvia scored high in “arts and culture” and “architectural landmarks”. Brits seeking traditional British food even when they are on a vacation will hardly find a better destination than Cyprus. This destination ranked highest in this category. It is also the best place to hang out with other Brits as there is a big number of fellow travelers who visit Cyprus every year. Finally, Slovenia and Slovakia are also among the best destinations perfect for all travelers seeking authentic experiences and learning the culture of other countries.
