The story of a solo female traveler who was refused to check-in has become viral online, especially in Indian internet as this story happened in the southern city of Hyderabad. A local hotel declined to provide room for a female who arrived in the city on business and had a room booked at Hotel Deccan Erragadda.
Nupur Saraswat, who is originally from Singapore, was in Hyderabad for the performing purpose Saraswat is a spoken word artist. She arrived at her hotel that had been booked through Goibibo, a third party booking website incredibly popular in India, only to find out that she cannot check-in as “single ladies” are not allowed. The hotel management replied that the hotel was “not the right place” for a solo female traveler and that was actually written in the hotel’s policy. Besides single women, the hotel refuses to serve “locals and unmarried couples”.
It’s not the first time Saraswat visits India, but she was never refused a room at any hotel before this accident based on the fact that she was “single”. She didn’t have any problems of that type in any other country she had traveled either. As she wasn’t aware of the rule, she contacted Goibibo, but they replied that they couldn’t help. Only after the story of the solo female traveler went viral, the booking service issued a refund for Ms. Saraswat and offered a complimentary room for her.
Goibibo published a blog post, in which they assured readers of close attention to the complaint. They also decided to de-list Hotel Deccan Erragadda from their booking platform during the investigation period. According to Goibibo, the hotel was “not against” single women, but they considered the location of their hotel in Hyderabad not a good area for single women. However, Saraswat mentions that the booking platform simply didn’t check the policy of the hotel that clearly states that single ladies, unmarried couples, and locals are not allowed to stay there. Needless to say, she finds the policy unacceptable.
Hotel Deccan Erragadda is located in Hyderabad, almost 3.9 kilometers away from Jalavihar. Another famous landmark of the city, Banjara Hills, is 4 kilometers away from the hotel. The distance to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is more than 24 kilometers. The hotel has a private terrace, on-site restaurant, free Wi-Fi, complimentary parking for clients of the hotel, grocery delivery, and the massage service.
