A hotel in the UK city of Blackpool has decided to attract more clients in quite an unusual way. It has rebranded as The Viagra Hotel. Locals reacted with outrage to the new name as Blackpool is known as a family-friendly resort, and such a name is considered controversial and unsuitable.
The 29 room guesthouse on Dickson Road was operating under the name “the Vidella” in the past. Now, the big sign of the hotel features the Viagra name and the promise to “keep you up all night”. According to the hotel’s owner, Neil Marshall, the idea of changing the hotel’s name came out as a desire to make it more obvious that this is a cheap guesthouse. Guests thought the hotel named “Vidella” was a posh one and were disappointed afterwards. Another reason for selecting such a controversial name was an attempt to stand out in a small town with numerous hotels. Marshall says the hotel has attracted more clients since the rebranding and travelers find the new name amusing.
However, that’s not what locals think as many of them consider such a hotel name absolutely inappropriate. According to officials and travel organizations, Viagra is a wrong choice of a name for a hotel in Blackpool, a popular destination for family holidays. That would have a bad impression on visitors or would attract weirdos instead of good guests.
Anyway, the hotel is not likely to operate under such a name for a long time given that Viagra is a brand that is owned by Pfizer. The company was inquired about the case, and Pfizer spokesman said they did not support any use of the Viagra trademark and would take appropriate actions.
