Hotels in Warsaw had very good results for June 2012, mostly thanks to successful 2012 European Football Championship.
During the days of the popular football event the city was visited by a record 1.4 million people. The football tournament was held in two countries, Poland and Ukraine. Poland hosted a series of group stage matches, one quarterfinal and one semi-final. The city was also the base for Russian and Polish football teams and their fans. Because of a huge influx of visitors to the city, hotels in Warsaw were able to gain their profits tremendously – 195.6% up to the level of €171.72 (US$210.29) per room. Such a huge growth of profit has certainly made RevPAR grow as well. In June revenue per available room added 165.2% and estimated €206.22 (US$252.54). Thanks to this fact hotels in Warsaw finished the month among the best performing cities of Europe.
The increase of revenue is notable in all sectors of Warsaw accommodations. Corporate segment added 150.3%, BAR was 58.5% higher, residential conference segment was +210.7%, leisure travel segment added 129.1%, and groups segment was 281.7% higher.
An interesting fact – even though the growth of revenues associated with hotel rooms is simply stunning, football fans were definitely not very amused by restaurants and bars in hotels and preferred various eateries in the city. The revenue of hotels’ bars and restaurants per available guestroom was 21.3% lower. It fell down to €33.37 from €42.40 for the same month a year ago.
Without a doubt, not only hotels in Warsaw benefited from the European Football Championship, but also various travel agents, who greatly increased their commissions per room sold. Clients had to pay a commission of €5.83 instead of regular €2.68 in order to make bookings for the football event.
