New figures by STR Global show that Asia Pacific and Europe have the biggest pipeline in the world at the moment. This information is present in the latest report of the company and is based on January 2012 data.
Currently Asia Pacific region has 1,479 hotels in pipeline with the total number of guestrooms equal to 359,753. As expected, China is the undoubted leader with 141,177 guestrooms under construction. There are also five countries, where the number of rooms under construction exceeds 5,000. These are India with 28,769 guestrooms, Thailand (8,807 guestrooms), Vietnam (7,957 guestrooms), Malaysia (7,479 guestrooms), and Indonesia (6,762 guestrooms).
The total number of hotels under construction in Europe is 866 properties with 139,700 guestrooms. The leaders of the region show much more modest results than Asia Pacific. The best performer is London with 4,638 guestrooms. The second place is occupied by Moscow with 2,228 guestrooms. There are four more locations, which pipeline exceeds 1,000 rooms. These are Berlin (1,671 guestrooms), Amsterdam (1,246 guestrooms), Vienna (1,184 guestrooms), and Stockholm (1,064 guestrooms under construction).
What about other regions? The pipeline of hotels in the Middle East and Africa is equal to 495 hotels with 131,981 guestrooms. Hotels in Qatar show the biggest increase in hotels under construction - +69.9% or 7,340 guestrooms. The expected growth of other countries – Oman +68.8% and 4,504 guestrooms, Saudi Arabia +54% and 25,398 guestrooms, Algeria +41.2% and 1,691 guestrooms, and the UAE +48% and 44,056 guestrooms. The pipeline of the Central and South America estimates 202 hotels with 30,002 guestrooms.
