In 2011 hotels in Switzerland suffered from the decline of the number of visitors by 7.3%. The tourists from Germany are on the top of the list with 10% less visitors. While Swiss franc remains strong, a holiday in the Alps is an expensive choice, so more tourists consider other destinations.
The proportion of overnight stays of visitors from other countries fell by 3.5% in 2011. The UK travellers spent 8.3% less nights in Swiss hotels. The number of tourists from Italy fell by 6.2%. At the same time the number of visitors in hotels in the Netherlands added approximately the same figure.
Swiss hotels have always been considered an expensive destination for rest. Nowadays the uncertainty in the economic position of the euro zone and high exchange rate of franc make people to choose other vacation destinations. Franc, which is known as “safe-haven”, is approximately 30% stronger than before the crisis of 2008.
The lack of European tourists is partially compensated by visitors from Asian countries. The growth of the number of Chinese tourists estimates 47%. In 2011 Swiss hotels were visited by 17% more Indians and 24% more South Koreans. The in-country tourism remains steady as the decline in overnight sales for the local tourists estimated just 0.1% in 2011.
