August was a good month for hotels in Europe. According to the data published by UNWTO (the United Nations World Tourism Organization), the number of international arrivals in Europe has grown by 4.5% during eight months of 2011. The total number of arrivals estimated 671 million. This is 29 million visits more comparing to the same period of 2010.
Even though the situation in Europe remains unstable, the increase in the number of arrivals in August reached 6%. Hotels in Northern, Central and Eastern Europe featured the increase of 7-8%. Hotels in South Europe have also shown improved performance which is mostly caused by the unrest in the Middle East and North Africa.
European economy is now very vulnerable, so it needs so “gear up”. The rise in international tourism is an important driver that could help many economies of the region to struggle better with consequences of recession and new problems of Europe. UNWTO encourages countries to support and promote tourism in them as this is a good way to recover quicker and create new jobs.
According to UNWTO, the year may finish with the growth of international arrivals of 4-4.5%. In 2012 this process may slow down a bit, reaching the growth of 3-4%.
