China is not only the world’s leader in terms of hotel pipeline, but also the first country to surpass pre-recession levels in hotel building.
Currently the number of projects “in process” in China is 1,260, adding as much as 353,254 guestrooms to the country’s market. In the second quarter of 2008 the number of accommodations under development was 1,240.
Unlike many other countries, economic recession hasn’t touched China severely. The reason for this is in a thoughtful politics of the government that quickly moved in with a large expansion of credit that has allowed simulating growth and creating new jobs. Large companies like property investors and state-owned companies benefited from this the most, so they were able to continue lodging development.
The total pipeline of Asia Pacific estimates 2,036 properties with 505,562 guestrooms. As we can see, China occupies 70% of the region’s development and so it fastens the development of other countries in the region.
The second largest pipeline destination of the region and the third largest country of the world in terms of the number of hotels under development is India. Here the number of hotels that are yet to open reaches 412 with the total of 75,112 guestrooms. The growth of pipeline in India is not so impressive. Among the reasons of this experts call logistical and infrastructure problems as whole building procedure is based on government approvals that require time and other difficulties. The third place is occupied by Vietnam, where are developed 62 projects, or 18,013 guestrooms in total. This destination features the growth of the pipeline of 29%, mostly geared up by hotels at the South China Sea cost.
