Ronda, Spain

From series “Amazing Cities on the Rocks”
The town of Ronda is located in the province of Malaga in Spain. It is located at an altitude of about 760 meters above sea level in a very beautiful and inaccessible mountainous area. Guadalevin River flows through the town. This makes the atmosphere even more unique here. The very first town was formed in this mountainous area during the Roman Empire. Its visitors can admire historical monuments of various eras today. You can enter the town via one of three bridges. They were built over a deep canyon.

Ronda, Spain The territory of the town is divided into two parts today – the old and the new one. The Puente Nuevo Bridge is a kind of border between them. This bridge was built in the early 18th century. It remains unchanged from the moment of construction. Many travelers prefer to climb down into the gorge of El Tajo. It is located under the bridge. They can admire the town below. The historical monument looks even more impressive from there.

You can see many snow-white houses while walking through the streets of the historic district. Locals call these houses "Pueblos Blancos". They make the historic district of Ronda very similar to the Greek island of Santorini. There is a very beautiful Alameda Del Tajo Park in the town. Some of its platforms offer a great view of the surrounding area. Many ancient churches are also preserved here. Some of them are more than 400 years old. There is also the ancient fortress of Murallas y Puertas Islámicas de Ronda. The house of the king of the Moors is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments. Next - Al-Hajjarah

Top destination around Ronda - Ronda

There was an ancient settlement named Arunda on the site of modern Ronda in the prehistoric time. The early Celts were the first inhabitants in the area. During the Carthage period, local people were obliged to provide food to the army that was fighting with the Greeks and Romans at that moment. The Romans conquered the Iberian Peninsula in 197 AD. After that, Arunda entered a true period of prosperity. The settlement significantly grew in size and even started minting its coin. The fifth century AD was the period of numerous enemy invasions. The Suebi, Vandals, Alans, and Visigoths plundered Arunda and destroyed it. Two centuries later, the Moors captured this territory.

The new rulers decided to build a new town on the ruins. They called this settlement Hisn Ar-Rundah. The Castilian kings managed to drive the invaders out and liberate the town only in 1485. They changed the town’s name to Ronda. The town was gaining political importance starting from the 16th century. New districts were built in Ronda, and the town established business relations with other cities and countries. During the Napoleonic invasion in the early 19th century, the French troops led by Joseph Bonaparte entered Ronda in 1810. When the French were forced to leave, they burnt many buildings in the town.
