The world famous Serra da Capivara National Park is in the northeastern part of Brazil. The place is famous not only for its natural attractions, but also for priceless monuments of rock art. The first archaeologist who explored these amazing places, was Nede Gideon. After his discovery, the amazing park was recognized as a World Heritage Site. The area of Serra da Capivara is more than 1 200 square km. Since the first archaeological expeditions, research doesn't stop here.
The park can be safely called a true open-air exhibition of the rock art. Some of the rock paintings discovered here were made more than 10 000 years ago. Most drawings depict scenes of hunting. There are also drawings dedicated to the life of local residents and housekeeping. The ancient drawings have another interesting feature. Some of them were made with the blue paint that has a complex mineral composition. Such paint wasn't used anywhere else in the world.
Besides ancient paintings, many unique archaeological artifacts were discovered at Serra da Capivara. Those include ancient tools and ceramics, burials of primitive people and other evidences that thousands of years ago these places have been inhabited. The national park is a real nature treasury. Dozens of endemic plants grow there, and rare species of birds and mammals can be seen. Rocky formations are of particular interest. They represent the result of the once powerful volcanic activity.
